Radisson Blu Benghazi

reimagining an icon for a new era of hospitality
Radisson Blu Benghazi, 2024
Originally known as the Tibesti Hotel, one of Benghazi’s most recognizable landmarks, the project reimagines the existing hotel complex through a comprehensive architectural renovation. Rather than replacing the building, the design transforms its architectural identity by introducing a contemporary façade language, redesigned interiors, and upgraded hospitality spaces that meet international Radisson Blu standards. The intervention preserves the structural potential of the existing complex while establishing a renewed destination that reflects the city’s evolving urban character.
The project is organized through a clear hierarchy of public and private functions. A multi-level podium accommodates reception, lounges, restaurants, conference halls, wellness facilities, and business spaces, while the upper levels are dedicated to hotel rooms and suites, ensuring privacy and efficient circulation. Distinct entrance sequences separate guests, conference visitors, and service access, while generous double-height interiors establish visual continuity and reinforce the hotel’s welcoming atmosphere. This layered organization allows hospitality, business, and social activities to coexist within a cohesive architectural framework.
The façade design was developed specifically for Benghazi’s hot Mediterranean climate. High-performance glazing, and a suspended mesh façade system provide effective solar protection while preserving panoramic views toward the sea and the surrounding landscape. Inspired by the movement of water and the nearby coastline, the wave-patterned mesh introduces a distinctive architectural identity while improving environmental performance. Natural stone, warm wood finishes, and carefully integrated lighting create refined interior environments that complement the contemporary character of the building. Through the integration of passive environmental strategies and flexible mixed-use programming, Radisson Blu Benghazi establishes a new benchmark for hospitality architecture while contributing a distinctive landmark to the city’s evolving skyline.
