Calea Victoriei 220

reclaiming an abandoned gem in Bucharest
Calea Victoriei, 2021
CV220 lies on a beautiful corner spot on the famous Calea Victoriei in Bucharest. For the last decade, the art-deco building was abandoned and functioned rather as an advertising facade greeting the main street. The design task required repurposing the building into a lively social space with temporary housing units.
The greatest design challenge for CV220 was to re-interpret the building with respect to contemporary housing requirements, yet preserving its original art-deco identity and the general layout. The design preserves the building footprint, but the facade and interiors are modified to be able to serve contemporary minimal housing units. The ground floor is reserved for social spaces to serve the building occupants as well as visitors and passersby. The renovation also features the addition of a penthouse with a rooftop garden.
